Outdoor ice skating is always a big hit with kids. Christopher Morley Park at Roslyn in Nassau County has been very popular since 1966. Skate rentals are available, and there’s even a fire pit where everyone can warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. Still in Nassau County is Grant Park Rink, at Hewlett. They even have night skating on weekends and holidays, and also offer skate rentals.
Two other popular skating rinks in Nassau County are Marjorie R. Post Community Park Ice Rink in Massapequa and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park Ice Rink in Syosset.
Suffolk County has five really popular outdoor skating rinks, as well. Buckskill Winter Club in East Hampton is just north of the Montauk Highway with fantastic amenities, including a cafe with a fireplace, change area, regular ice resurfacing, both skate and helmet rentals, and balancing aids for new skaters. This is a bit pricier than others, but your kids will love it, and you’ll appreciate the value.
There are also Mitchell Park Ice Rink in Greenport, which is right on the waterfront and offers skate rentals and lessons, and the Rinx at Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson, a smaller rink with an amazing view, locker rentals and lessons for all ages.
Over in Southampton, there’s the Southampton Ice Rink. This rink uses refrigeration to keep it open right into April, when all the ponds and rivers in the area have already melted. It’s right next to a mini-gold and driving range.
At Deer Park, you can make a whole day of it with even young children. The Tanger Outlet Ice Rink at the Arches is surrounded by stores and restaurants. These include Johnny Rockets, a huge favorite with kids. There’s so much to do for all ages. This is a great choice, especially for larger families.
Did you know that a chauffeured Long Island limousine service is a great way to travel with kids? We found that with our four kids, it was less expensive than a cab (we would have had to hire two) and far more pleasant. Kids love travelling in a limousine, and will remember the experience for a lifetime.
You can really top the day off by arranging to have hot chocolate waiting for the whole family in the limo when you get picked up. The happy but chilly skaters can warm up in style and comfort with a cup of hot chocolate in hand, as your ride whisks you back to your hotel or home!
